CEO and Founder, Yardbirds Backyard Chickens
With a lifetime of animal husbandry experience, a deep-seated interest in global and community sustainability, and an M.S. in Urban Wildlife Ecology, Khrysti Smyth founded Yardbirds Backyard Chickens in May of 2012 as a way to use her knowledge and experience to help people grow some of their own, healthy food while reconnecting with the natural world in their own backyards and their neighborhood community. She has since been a consultant for multiple cities and towns in the greater Boston area as they have addressed the idea of urban chickens, including being the primary backyard chicken consultant in the development of the City of Somerville’s urban agriculture ordinance, and a member of the backyard chickens working group for the City of Boston as they developed their own version, Article 89. Khrysti sees chicken-keeping as a “next-level” addition to both a healthy garden ecosystem as well as a sustainable local food system.
